What is an Essential Oil?
Essential oils are extracts with curative powers from the world of plants that have through centuries developed unique and countless defence systems.
Usually obtained by steam distillation of water at low pressure, this powerful substance contains average concentrations 75 to 100 times higher than a decoction or maceration.
These oils have an extraordinary penetrating power (blood, nervous system and brain) in the body, and directly pass skin, digestive and olfactory barriers, and are removed by the liver.
They act on anguish, consciousness, fears, impotence, frigidity, memory, concentration, depression, irritability, anger, … Essential oils have many uses and benefits.
Association of essential oils create synergies which are are sold under the name of complexes.
Traditional therapists and doctors do not recommend use of more than 4 to 5 HE by complex, but new tools available make it possible to scientifically formulate complex of many more essential oils that boost the effects sought without causing antagonism.
For an essential oil to have therapeutic quality there must be a delicate process which must meet a number of criteria and quality controls. (see definition in our Glossary )
It takes a lot of plants to make Essential Oil
256 pounds of peppermint leaf to make one pound of peppermint Essential Oil;
150 pounds or more of lavender flowers to make one pound of lavender Essential Oil;
Thousands of pounds of roses to make 1 pound of rose Essential Oil;
Essential Oils contain very concentrated properties of the herb or plant they are derived from.
A very small amount of Essential Oils often has the qualities of many cups of herbal tea from the same plant.
For instance, one drop of peppermint Essential Oil is equivalent to 26-28 cups of peppermint tea.
This isn’t to say essential oils should not be used, but they should be used carefully, with proper education and in safe amounts. If you wouldn’t ingest dozens of cups of an herbal tea, you should probably think twice before consuming the equivalent amount of essential oils ...
How are Essential Oil manufactured?
First of all it is necessary to harvest the organ of the plant you want to distil; indeed it is possible to distil many organs: leaves, flowers, bark or roots.
The most common extraction method is hydro distillation, a process which allows volatile compounds to drag part of a plant with water vapour (according to the etymology of the word).
To produce essential oil you need a still equipped with a tank, a coil and a Florentine separator.
The water is heated to around 100 C; a variable temperature is best to get the most aromatic molecules.
Plant parts are placed on a grid in the tank, water vapour at low pressure carries the volatile particles of plants; once out of this tank, water vapour enriched with essential oil passes through a coil immersed in the constantly renewed fresh water.
Through condensation, steam is transformed into two separate products, on the one hand the essential oil of the plant and on the other hand, water loaded with the odour of the plant, called floral water.
The essential oil harvested without division or dilution is called a “totum”, that is to say all of the collected molecules.
Each plant species has to undergo a different process and performance, hence the importance of expertise and knowledge of plants. It is preferable that the plant be of biological origin and it is essential that it be defined by its Latin name, has no disease and is wild. The essential oils must be 100% pure, 100% natural, that is to say meet scientific standards and are unmodified thus preserving the totum of their molecules.
There are other modern extraction techniques:
– The expression, reserved for citruses, this technique extracts the molecules of the bark by pressure.
– Extraction by solvent, industrial method which presents rougher products and sometimes leave traces of solvents.
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the medical use of aromatic plant extracts (essential oils).
It was the chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé (1881-1950) who in 1910 first established the “aromatherapy” neologism.
A little bit of history helps us understand that the distillation of plants did not start yesterday.
There are traces of distillation or Extraction in China and India, dating back several millennia.
However it is in ancient Egypt that its real use was proven.
The invention of the alembic as we know it today, is attributed to the Persian physician-alchemist Jabir Ibn Hayyan , in the X century. Extraction processes were then improved, the pharmacopoeia using them above all after the sixteenth century.
The active ingredients of odoriferous molecules began to be isolated from the nineteenth century, which enabled major scientific advances in this field. (see definition in our Glossary )
How to Choose Essential Oils?
With a view to effectiveness, it is important to use oils that are:
100% pure, undivided or diluted
100% natural, with no added synthetic products
grown without pesticides or biological chemicals
To control the quality of each production of essential oils, it is necessary to equip scientists with tools such as chromatography and spectrometry.
Chromatography in gas phase makes it possible to identify the aromatic molecules present in an essential oil; the resulting graph contains a series of peaks, and each peak is a very specific molecule identified by computer.
The mass spectrometer allows us to obtain the relative proportion of each of the aromatic molecules of a essential oil; it is the quantitative composition.
What Method of Use For Essential Oils?
There are different methods of use of Essential Oils as defined by the absorption route:
Orally, by the gastrointestinal mucose, ingestion of oils.
Respiratory tract, by inhalation or bathroom smells.
Orally through lukewarm mouthwashes.
Rectal with enemas or suppositories.
Dermal; despite being waterproof, skin absorbs the essential oils very quickly and they are transported to the organs for which they have a specific activity. Dermal also covers all different types of massages.
Why so many price changes with commodities?
Global agriculture is buffeted by various factors:
Climate change has severely affected crops in recent years.
Whether the great droughts of the Mediterranean basin or late frosts recorded in Eastern Europe, all these factors have greatly harmed crops.
New diseases have appeared; Spanish thyme was decimated in 2015 and 2016, although they hope to have found a natural remedy for this purpose.
Political situations in North African countries have harmed the local economy, leading to other types of crops, more food-based, many farmers.
I want to refer, as evidence, to a historic country for Essential Oils, Egypt, which has suffered the brunt of this crisis and has barely recovered from it.

General Precautions with Essential Oils
E2 formulations take into account the safety instructions imposed by legislations by fully managing the percentages of active substances authorised by the European Convention on Cosmetics and Natural Products, that means the rate of allergenic molecules is controlled by European health authorities and does not allow us to exceed the rate that may cause allergenic reactions in human beings.
We recommend not to use our products in the presence of children under the age of one year (12 months). Use caution for persons with asthma, epilepsy, allergy or with other health conditions.
For pets, dogs generally respond well to Essential Oils, cats on the other hand are more sensitive to Essential Oils and can be disturbed by them (especially complexes containing catnip (Nepeta Cataria) Essential Oil (Glossary )).
Never allow children to use Essential Oils without the presence of an adult who is well informed about their use. Most Essential Oils smell wonderful and many Essential Oils such as citrus oils can smell as if they were "delicious" and safe to drink. Always keep your Essential Oils out of the reach of children. Treat Oils like drugs that are poison in unknown hands.
Never put Essential Oils in your ears, eyes or nose.
If you accidentally have Oils in your eyes, do not rinse your eyes with water. The Oil will then sink deeper and cause more pain and possible damage. Use a carrier oil (olive oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil or any vegetable oil) to extract the oil.
Always wash your hands after using Essential Oils, you don't want to accidentally get oil in your eyes or mucus membranes as this will inevitably be very painful and possibly damaging.
Essential oils are flammable. Keep them out of the way of fire hazards or extreme heat.
Store Essential Oils in a dry and ventilated place, away from light and extreme temperature fluctuations.
Can I use E2 Air Sprays on the skin or on a cushion?
You can of course use the spray on cushions or other textiles.
E2 Air Sprays are designed to be used on clothing or linen, however, due to the active nature of Essential Oils, it is preferable to test on a non-visible part of the fabric or garment before application, especially if it is made of synthetic material.
The method of using these products is not cutaneous, so it is not recommended, however, if this happens, do not worry because the rate of allergenic molecules is controlled by European health authorities and does not allow us to exceed the rate that may cause allergenic reactions in human beings.
Why are there so many Essential Oils in E2 Complexes?
Despite our experience in traditional aromatherapy, we want to bring scientifically developed formulae to the general public with a view to effectiveness and user comfort.
E2 Essential Oil original complexes are scientifically developed to work in synergy for a specific purpose (Sleep Spray, Sanitizing Spray, Stop Mosquitoes,...); We are always looking to integrate Essential Oils that complement and reinforce each other for maximum efficiency, safety and comfort for the final user.
How does the IRIS Diffuser heat the Essential Oils capsules?
IRIS Capsules are specially designed to work in harmony with the Diffuser.
The patented heating system of the IRIS Diffuser is designed to never exceed 45° Celsius (113°F), a gentle temperature that preserves the active ingredients of the Essential Oils during their diffusion.
The current diffusion systems (flame, excessive heat, etc.) destroy Essential Oils and produce toxic fumes (carbon dioxide, combustion residues, allergens …), diffusion by misting or fogging, meanwhile, can not meet the promises made as pure and natural Essential Oils are not water soluble.
IRIS diffuses pure and natural essential oils without generating pollution.
By its unique system of controlled low temperature about 45 °C, IRIS preserves and disseminates the quintessence of all the active ingredients of Essential Oils of our compositions, for the welfare, health, and of course purifies and perfumes your environment.
Can I put my own Essential Oils in IRIS capsules?
Generally it is not recommended to make you own blends, as allergen rates cannot be controlled precisely and Essential Oils are extremely powerful and dense in molecules and active principles.
Also, our Essential Oil complexes are scientifically selected and composed in our laboratories under the advice of aromatherapists to achieve a precise objective, the selected Oils working in the same direction and strengthening each other in synergy.
In addition, we use 11ml (0.38 fl.oz.) [28 grams] of 100% organic Essential Oils per capsule, and it is very likely that your own blend will cost you much more depending on the ingredients used.
What are the recommendations for pets?
E2 100% organic Essential Oil Complexes are made up of several Oils operating in synergy (from 21 to 47 for our Air Sprays); Consequently each oil is present in our Complexes only in very small quantities and the level of allergens present in the active ingredients remains significantly below the levels authorised by law.
Dogs generally respond well to Essential Oils but cats, on the other hand, are more sensitive to Essential Oils and can be disturbed by them (especially complexes containing catnip (Nepeta Cataria) Essential Oil (Glossary )
In any case, in the presence of domestic animals, it is preferable to:
Test with a small amount of product in the animal's presence and wait about 15 minutes to see how it reacts (For aerial sprays, just try one spray; for IRIS diffuser turn on for 2 to 5 minutes with one capsule engaged).
Never spray E2 products directly on the animal, and be careful not to leave the products or packaging within reach of your pet.
